PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
ACGOW’S 21st ANNUAL REGIONAL EXHIBIT, JURIED BY ROBERTA RICHMAN,
FEATURES NEW LOUISE PITTAWAY AWARD
The Artists’ Cooperative Gallery of Westerly proudly presents their 21st Annual Regional Exhibit with an Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony on Friday, May 2, from 5PM to 8PM. Awards will be presented at 7PM. The largest and most diverse show of ACGOW’s year, the juried Regional Show is open to local and regional artists from across the Northeast. Exceptional work is recognized in various fine arts and fine craft categories and ten prizes will be awarded, including, for the first time, the Louise Pittaway Award for Excellence in Oil Painting.
This year ACGOW is honored to have Roberta Richman, MFA, Printmaking, Indiana University, BA, Fine Arts, Brooklyn College, and founding Artist Member of Hera Gallery, as juror. Ms. Richman will be responsible for determining the winners of ten Fine Arts and Craft awards. For the first time, the $500 Louise Pittaway Award for Excellence in Oil Painting will be awarded, in honor of the late Connecticut oil painter and photographer. Fine Art awards also include the $200 Washington Trust Company Award; $100 ACGOW Award; $200 Professional Planning Award and the $100 Jerry’s Artarama Award. Five $250 Craft Awards will be given by the Katherine Forest Crafts Foundation.
When asked about her decision to jury ACGOW’s Regional Exhibit, Ms. Richman explained: “I am a great supporter of the arts and have worked for many years to make original high quality art available to my local community, reaching many members of the community who would not otherwise have exposure to it. The Artists’ Cooperative Gallery does the same for the Westerly community and I am happy to support it.”
On jurying and curating, Ms. Richman adds: “I do enjoy the process but also find it challenging… It is hard for an individual artist to remember that the selection process is inevitably very personal and subjective.” About ACGOW’s theme for the year, 'Telling Stories,' Ms. Richman continues: "From my perspective, all art, figurative, abstract, conceptual or minimal, tells stories. I look forward to seeing many wonderful works of art and hope that it will be difficult to limit my selection.”
The late Louise Davis Pittaway was Curator of the Old Light House Museum on Stonington Point from 1984 to 2012. Louise and her husband Robert Pittaway lived in Stonington, CT. The arts were important to Ms. Pittaway, who sang second soprano with the Westerly Chorus from 1971 until 2012. She was an accomplished photographer and oil painter, working at her studio at the Velvet Mill. She was a member of both ACGOW and the Mystic Art Association, and her photographs and oil paintings appeared in many area galleries.
Her friends and family have created an award in Ms. Pittaway’s memory. The Louise Pittaway Award for Excellence in Oil Painting will be awarded annually as part of the Annual Juried Regional Art Exhibit at the ACGOW. Donations to the award can be made to The Louise Pittaway Award, The Artists’ Cooperative Gallery of Westerly, 7 Canal Street, Westerly, RI 02891.
