Literacy Volunteers of Washington County is pleased to announce the first featured author in the Joyce S. Ahern Author Series - Summer 2015. Jay Tunney, Author of The Prizefighter and The Playwright, will be appearing at the The Ocean House in Watch Hill on July 9, 2015 at 5:00pm. The presentation will be followed by a reception and book signing.
The Prizefighter and The Playwright is a captivating tale that tells the story of the surprising relationship between Jay’s father, legendary boxer Gene Tunney, and the playwright George Bernard Shaw. Tunney, who defeated Jack Dempsey for the heavyweight crown in 1926 and 1927, had a life-long love of words and literature. In December of 1928 he fulfilled his dream of meeting Nobel Prize-winning playwright George Bernard Shaw, and this was the beginning of an unlikely friendship. “I have never been given to close personal friendships, as you know, and Gene Tunney is among the very few for whom I have established a warm affection,” wrote Shaw. “I enjoy his company as I have that of few men.” This book evolved from the acclaimed BBC radio series The Master and the Boy and includes never before published letters, interviews and photographs from his family.
Tickets for the event are $75 per person and available online at www.LiteracyWashingtonCounty.org or by calling the office at (401) 596-9411. For questions or more information please contact Jennifer Coduri Ross at AstDir@LiteracyWashingtonCounty.org.Tell a Friend
