Wings & Wishes Butterfly Garden to be held July 12-14, Friday- Sunday
Private butterfly release to take place Thursday, July 11 for sponsors of butterflies
The Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck Area Chamber of Commerce and the Westerly Lions Club are co-presenting the “Wings & Wishes Butterfly Garden” at Pleasant Acres Nursery, 130 Franklin Street, Westerly, RI. 1,000 butterflies, representing 6 different species: Black swallowtail, Giant Swallowtail, Monarch, Painted Lady, Red Admirals and Zebra Longwings will be on display in a lavish greenhouse setting. Visitors to the butterfly garden will experience incredible photo opportunities as they learn about butterflies and interact with these beautiful creatures.
The butterfly garden will be open to the public on Friday July 12, Saturday July 13 and Sunday July 14 from 10am – 5 pm. One greenhouse will be devoted to the Butterfly Garden and an activities area. Activities that will take place include educational/nature family programs presented by the Mystic Aquarium which will bring a small invertebrate touch tank with sea stars, shellfish, lobster and more, Born to Be Wild Nature Center which will present 5 birds of prey, Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center which will bring frogs, turtles, and a snake, Save the Bay, Eric Fiske and Stuart Woronecki, beekeepers will display their hobby. Fosters Parrots will be in attendance with information about their parrot rescue program. Many of these organizations will have their programs and brochures on display in a greenhouse. Madam Butterfly, a costumed butterfly character will read aloud specially selected children’s books about butterflies. There will be a butterfly parade on Saturday, facepainting, butterfly tattoos, balloons and a butterfly photo station will be available. The Westerly Lions will provide free vision screenings. Pleasant Acres will have a large floral butterfly sculpture on display. Refreshments and novelties will be available.
Admission is $3 for children 12 and under, $5 for adults. Group discounts available for summer camp programs and day care facilities on Friday July 12.
The event is a joint production of the Westerly Lions Club and the Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck Area Chamber of Commerce. Private Butterfly Release Event- Members of the public may “sponsor” a butterfly by paying $20 in advance and participating in the private butterfly release on Thursday July 11, at 7pm, a night when the butterflies are introduced to their Westerly habitat at Pleasant Acres. Each butterfly sponsor will be handed an envelope that contains a live butterfly for them to release into the greenhouse at Pleasant Acres Nursery. Over 180 of the butterflies have been sponsored by local individuals so far.
